At Maryborough Special School students in P - 10 access a highly individualised HPE (Health and Physical Education) program. In term 1 and 4 the aquatic program offers swimming and water-safety in an aquatic environment, theraquatics, towards stroke development and water-polo. Drowning is the greatest cause of accidental death in children under five in Australia. Each week, on average, one child drowns. Water safety is an essential skill for our students to learn.
Our theraquatics program is based on the Halliwick concept which focuses on biophysical principles of motor control in water, in particular developing sense of balance and core stability. The Halliwick ten point program implements the concept in a progressive program of mental adjustment, disengagement, and development of motor control, with an emphasis on rotational control, and applies the program to teach physically disabled people balance control, swimming and independence.
