Maryborough Special School is a specialist educational setting dedicated to supporting students with intellectual disability and multiple impairments to become confident, capable and connected members of their community.
Our school is organised into four phases of learning:
- Early Years – Prep year to year 2. Our Early Years Phase provides a warm and positive start to school, helping students develop a sense of belonging and see themselves as capable learners through the General Capabilities of the Australian Curriculum. Through nurturing relationships, supportive routines and engaging learning experiences, students build the confidence, language, communication and self-management skills needed to participate successfully in school and connect with others.
- Primary – Years 3 to Year 6 -Building on the foundations established in the Early Years, our Primary Phase focuses on developing the language and communication, independence and self-management skills needed for active participation in learning through the Australian Curriculum. Students are encouraged to strengthen their ability to express themselves, make choices, engage with others and take increasing responsibility for their learning, fostering confidence and independence across school and everyday life
- Secondary – Years 7 to year 10 - Building on the foundations developed throughout their school journey, our Secondary Years Phase supports students to grow in confidence, communication and independence through the Australian Curriculum. Students are encouraged to strengthen their language and social communication skills, develop self-advocacy, and make meaningful choices about their learning and future pathways. Through real-world experiences and authentic learning opportunities, we help students build the life skills, resilience and independence needed to participate successfully in their community and prepare for life beyond school.
- Seniors – Years 11 and 12 - Our Senior Phase focuses on preparing students for life beyond school. Through the Queensland Curriculum for Individual Achievement (QCIA), students engage in personalised learning experiences that build independence, communication, self-advocacy and practical life skills. Community-based learning and connections with local programs and support services help students develop the confidence, skills and experiences needed for a meaningful, connected and fulfilling future.
Across all phases, students participate in high-quality programs designed to meet their unique learning needs while building upon their strengths, interests and aspirations.
Positive relationships are at the centre of everything we do. Through restorative practices and a Positive Behaviour for Learning Curriculum, we create a safe, inclusive and respectful environment where students are supported to build trust, develop self-awareness, strengthen social connections and learn from their experiences. We believe that strong relationships provide the foundation for learning, resilience and personal growth.
Maryborough Special School values diversity, celebrates individual achievements and fosters a culture of belonging where every student is known, valued and supported to succeed. Working in partnership with families and the wider community, we strive to provide opportunities that empower students to realise their potential and prepare them for a fulfilling future.
